Those darn brownies...(For MA and Beth)

Note to self: Dont try out new cooking skills when you have guests over.

I took from England a recipe for making brownies, which I had already helped make once with MA (Ian's mom). Once is enough since they're not that difficult to make. I even searched high and low across the supermarkets in Alcalá to find some vanilla essence and baking soda....anyways, finally the time comes to make it (and it was Jonny's birthday so I wanted it to be birthday brownies) and I realise that we don't have any kind of measuring equipment. Hmmmm - I'll just ask Ian to work it out for me.
On I go with the approx measurements. The bowl I started to make the mix in was too small and the electric hand whisk that I found when we moved here wasn't working properly and couldn't handle the mix; brownie mix was being applied to all parts of the kitchen...

So, we borrowed another bowl from the guys house here and the brownies were on their way. The other bowl worked out great but we still weren't sure of the brown sugar we got since here you cannot but thick brown sugar - the hand whisk was giving up on me but I kept on in faith...

I forgot to pre-heat the oven but thats ok right?!!

...

Jonny said it looked like lava :-(

but I was still hopeful and holding onto my cooking skills (which are good thank you very much!) the oven, the approx recipe, the tired hand whisk and birthday celebrations to make this work...

When it finally came out of the oven...it was a solid as rock, very bubbly around the outsides but had a brownie crust in the middle, but still smelt and tasted liked brownie (kind of - more like an eggy brownie). Despite it going horribly wrong

in the end...

we had fun!!

  1. I love following the process with the pictures. All I can think is that the measurements must be important! Oh well...doesn't matter as long as you had fun! Looking forward to seeing you and Ian soon! Lots of love, Beth
